Hospital execs: Increased inpatient volume shifts to cardiac, ICU services

Inpatient volumes are expected to decline but outpatient volume will increase correspondingly, according to Healthcare Financial Management Association's (HFMA) Healthcare Financial Pulse survey. Some financial executives surveyed anticipate that volume will grow in selected inpatient areas, including cardiac, surgical and intensive care unit/critical care unit (ICU/CCU) services.

To reach go-live goal, ICD-10 implementation should start in January

Two advisory groups--the North Carolina Healthcare Information and Communications Alliance and the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange--estimate that ICD-10 implementation will take 966 days. Thus, for facilities desiring to meet a a federally mandated compliance deadline of Oct. 1, 2013, work on ICD-10 conversion should begin no later than Jan. 18, 2010.

CBO: House healthcare reform bill will add to deficit

The healthcare reform bill proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives last week would result in an estimated net increase in the federal budget deficit of $65 billion over the 2010-2019 period, according to a preliminary analysis performed by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT), and released July 17.

House unveils health reform bill

The U.S. House of Representatives has released the America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, its version of how to reform the current U.S. healthcare system. To support the bill's initiatives, it proposes a 5.4 percent tax on U.S. taxpayers earning more than $1 million; and a 1.5 percent tax on those who make more than $500,000, but less than $1 million.

Dignam named as new RTOG group statistician

James J. Dignam, PhD, has been named the new group statistician for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) and will lead the efforts of RTOG's Statistics and Data Management Center.
