Increasing the use of intravascular ultrasound when performing lower-extremity revascularization procedures could limit complications and improve patient outcomes, according to new recommendations from several medical societies.

The Society of Interventional Radiology launched its Virtex registry in 2020 with an eye on showcasing the profession's value. 

Numerous medical imaging societies, including the ACR, signed onto a letter dated Feb. 25 that was sent to members of Congress requesting collaboration on reforms to the Medicare physician payment system.

The measure to extend funding through Feb. 18 does not include any of the changes championed by physicians. 

The American College of Radiology pointed to screening exams as a possible area to enhance imaging access and utilization.

Morbidity and mortality conferences offer chances to review negative outcomes and implement practice changes to avoid similar events in the future.

The college said the codes are related to X-ray contrast of the knee and ultrasound guidance, among others.
