Neurologist says hockey, not football, has highest rate of concussions per participant

Here’s something to think about as you sit down to watch playoff hockey this month: While most headlines about concussions in sports are related to football, but they are actually more common in hockey.

Frank Conidi, DO, is chief of the Florida Center for Headache and Sports Neurology, head of the Florida high school athletic concussion committee, and team neurologist for the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers franchise. As reported by the Windsor Star, Hockey is Conidi’s first love, but he thinks the league could be in denial about concussions.

“Hockey has the highest incidence of concussion per participant, at any level,” Conidi said, as quoted in the story.
