ASE, GE partner in India for cardiovascular ultrasound training

The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) and GE Healthcare have teamed to provide a cardiovascular ultrasound training event for healthcare providers caring for underserved populations in rural northwest India.

A team of ASE member sonographers and physicians has traveled to New Delhi to train Indian physicians in image acquisition, while an additional team of ASE sonographers is assisting in training via the Internet and StatVideo’s EchoBoxes, which are designed to stream cardiac ultrasound images over the Internet, according to a GE press release.

The event is being conducted in collaboration with Medanta – The Medicity, a large multi-specialty medical institute in Gurgaon, in the National Capital Region. Twenty Indian physicians are receiving onsite training, and half are receiving additional remote instruction from the U.S.

GE and ASE previously collaborated on another medical camp in January. Participating clinicians in the current event will be using GE’s Vivid i and Vivid q plus the Vscan visualization tool to acquire images. In addition to StatVideo, the project includes Core Sound Imaging as a corporate sponsor. Core Sound Imaging will provide Studycast, a cloud-based PACS, to support the project.

The nuclear imaging isotope shortage of molybdenum-99 may be over now that the sidelined reactor is restarting. ASNC's president says PET and new SPECT technologies helped cardiac imaging labs better weather the storm.

CMS has more than doubled the CCTA payment rate from $175 to $357.13. The move, expected to have a significant impact on the utilization of cardiac CT, received immediate praise from imaging specialists.
