Bayer launches new platform to address challenges in radiology

This week Bayer announced the launch of Calantic Digital Solutions, a suite of applications intended to optimize clinical workflows by triaging and prioritizing critical findings, improving disease detection and automating tasks for radiologists. 

In a statement released June 28, Bayer indicated that the cloud-hosted platform, which includes AI-enabled programs, can aid radiologists in navigating the mounting workloads they are faced with in the wake of nationwide staff shortages. 

“AI has the potential to transform healthcare, and, particularly in medical imaging, it can turn the growing amounts of data into value-adding insights to support radiologists and their teams in their decision-making,” Dr. Ryan Lee, Chair, Department of Radiology, Einstein Healthcare Network, Philadelphia, said in the release. “It is crucial to drive innovation in this area and broaden access to digital tools that can help address the rising demand for solutions which improve the speed and accuracy of diagnoses.” 

To better manage radiology workflows, the apps focus on three key areas: triaging and prioritizing potentially urgent findings that merit timely review, improving lesion detection, and automating routine tasks and measurements.

Currently, the applications are centered on thoracic and neurological diseases (pulmonary nodules, large vessel occlusions, etc.), with the addition of more disease-specific packages on the horizon. Bayer indicates that they provide the installation, configuration and training for the Calantic platform.
