AI-based software improves follow-up imaging adherence by 74%
A recent collaboration between Inflo Health and East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) resulted in substantial improvements in the organization’s patient follow through, ushering in both increased workflow efficiency and revenue.
After EAMC integrated Inflo’s natural language processing (NLP) software into their workflow, the organization saw a 74% increase in completed follow-up recommendations for imaging of incidentally detected pulmonary nodules. What’s more, the software improved adherence to Fleischner Society Guidelines by 20% and boosted staff efficiency by as much as 95%, according to an Oct. 24 release shared by Inflo.
The AI-based software leverages natural language processing techniques to extract data from radiology reports. Trained using follow-up imaging criteria guidelines, the software identifies any findings deemed actionable, flags them for follow-up and initiates communication.
At EAMC, this was a task that a staff member usually completed in around five hours over the span of a week. The amount of time it took utilizing the program was reduced to just 15 minutes. EAMC estimates that the increased follow-up of recommended imaging exams combined with the efficiency owed to its use also generated an additional $9,000 in revenue per month.
The collaboration helped Inflo Health qualify for the American College of Radiology's (ACR) Learning Network Vendor Partner designation. Recommendations Follow-up is one of the four strategic goals ACR includes in its multidisciplinary structured improvement program ImPower.
Melinda Johnson, radiology director at EAMC, praised the improvements brought forth by integrating Inflo’s software into their workflows, stating that it “dramatically enhanced our approach to lung nodule management and radiology follow-up.”
