First fruits arrive from the HIMSS-SIIM enterprise-imaging workgroup

If enterprise imaging refers to visual clinical data acquired in nearly every corner of a healthcare institution’s realm—meaning not only radiology and cardiology but also pathology, ophthalmology, dermatology and maternal-fetal medicine, just to name a few—then enterprise-imaging governance refers to the people charged with putting all that data together to render it useful for clinical, financial and administrative end users.

With an eye on facilitating those ends, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) began pooling their time and talents in 2014.

The resulting HIMSS-SIIM enterprise imaging workgroup, which has been building momentum ever since, has now produced the first in a series of white papers to help health systems turn vision into action on a broad scale.

The current paper is primarily intended “for CMIOs and health informatics leaders looking to grow and govern a program to optimally capture, store, index, distribute, view, exchange and analyze the images of their enterprise,” the authors write in introducing the work.

However, it’s well worth a read by professionals in all image-producing departments—not least radiology.

SIIM’s Journal of Digital Imaging has posted the paper in full.
