US announces $16B in tariffs on Chinese goods in 2nd round of trade war

The trade war between U.S. and China continues to grow. The U.S. announced Tuesday, Aug. 7, that it will impose 25 percent tariffs on an additional $16 billion worth of goods imported from China.

The tariffs, impacting a total of 279 items, will take effect Aug. 23, said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer as reported by Business Insider.

The U.S.’s latest move in the skirmish comes shortly after the Chinese government announced plans to impose a 25 percent tariff on $16 billion worth of U.S. goods that went into effect Aug. 3.

Back in July, the U.S. officially put tariffs on $34 billion worth of products imported from China—including medical imaging equipment—into effect. In total, a tariff of 25 percent has now been finalized for $50 billion worth of Chinese products.
