$3M data lab will examine relationship between imaging, policy
A $3 million partnership between the American College of Radiology’s Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute and the Georgia Institute of Technology will establish a data analytics lab that will examine how policy impacts medical imaging, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.
The Health Economics and Analytics Lab (HEAL) will be located at the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. It apply artificial intelligence and big data analytics to large medical claims databases to understand the relationship between imaging and healthcare delivery and payment models.
“The goal of the HEAL lab is ultimately just to provide objective, credible scientific evidence into the national medical imaging debate,” said Danny Hughes, executive director of the Neiman Institute and professor of economics at Georgia Tech, to the Gwinnett Daily Post.
For example, Hughes noted data analytics could be used to look at the treatment model for a suspected stroke patient. Information gathered from various treatment factors could be applied to a larger set of stroke outcomes and alter treatment guidelines, he said.
Ultimately, the goal is to improve care and make treatment as cost-effective as possible, according to the report.
