Patients question radiology provider's billing practices after receiving notices from collections

Radiology Imaging Associates has recently come under fire after a number of patients complained of receiving collections notices before a single bill came through the mail.

Lone Tree, Colorado, resident Jim Samaras said he received two collection notices for bills that he never saw, Denver 7 reported Thursday. One $30 notice was for his wife with stage 4 colon cancer while another referenced a bill he says he never received (although he was mailed a bill for another patient).

A second individual, Dustin Blank, detailed a similar experience. And a quick online search performed by the news outlet revealed many additional complaints about the Englewood, Colorado-based radiology group with more than 100 radiologists operating across Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Hawaii.

In some cases these problems are linked to billing mistakes—wrong addresses misspelled names, etc.—but Adam Fox with Colorado Consumer Health Initiative said it may come down to “unscrupulous billing practices.”

The news outlet said Radiology Imaging Associates declined an interview request but offered up comment from Cynthia R. Dickerson, its vice president of customer experience and marketing:

“We deeply regret the billing service errors that Mr. Samaras has brought to our attention. His experience with our organization is inconsistent with our expectation for excellent customer service. We have identified a billing software error that likely caused the issues, and our team is working to make immediate corrections. We are committed to monitoring those corrections to ensure that all of our customers receive accurate and timely statements.”
