Eastman Kodak acquires CAD firm MiraMedica

Eastman Kodak Co. this week expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of MiraMedica Inc.'s computer-aided detection (CAD) technology.

Kodak acquired the Los Gatos, Calif. company's CAD software for an undisclosed amount. MiraMedica specializes in software that automatically highlights suspicious regions on a patient's image or digitized film image, prompting a radiologist to review the image again.

Kodak said that the CAD technology will add a new dimension to its line of digital medical imaging products and expand capabilities in what Kodak calls "image intelligence."

Dan Kerpelman, president of Kodak's Health Imaging Group, said the Rochester, N.Y.-based company plans to offer CAD software as a stand-alone product and as a component of Kodak's digital capture and image-and-information management systems.

Kodak already has named Wido Menhardt, MiraMedica's chief technology officer, as general manager of Kodak's CAD operations. MiraMedica President and CEO Caren Mason will serve as a business consultant during the transition.
