Illinois breast center utilizes Xoft radiation therapy
The Comprehensive Breast Health Center at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen, Ill., has delivered a complete dose of radiation therapy with Xoft therapy in the operating room at the time of lumpectomy for patients with early stage breast cancer.
The treatment called intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) utilizing Xoft’s Axxent Electronic Brachytherapy system uses a miniaturized x-ray source that can deliver localized and targeted radiation treatment. Electronic brachytherapy is designed to minimize radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue and allows physicians and treating professionals to remain in the operating room with the patient, according to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company.
