Siemens unveils automated breast volume scanner as work in progress
Siemens Healthcare introduced Acuson S2000 Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) at the 94th annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago earlier this month.
The Acuson S2000 ABVS system, which is 501(k) pending, acquires full-field sonographic volumes for review and diagnosis of the breast to streamline workflow and reduce operator dependence and variability. The system features the coronal plane to provide a more understandable representation of the global anatomy and architecture of the breast. Semi-automated reporting and comprehensive BI-RADS reporting capabilities further enhance clinical workflow. The Acuson S2000 ABVS has a mobile in-suite design that combines the ultrasound system with a transducer specifically designed for automated ultrasound breast volume imaging. To further optimize high-volume patient care, the system also supports breast imaging applications, such as fatty tissue and eSie Touch elasticity imaging.
Siemens showed implementations of Acoustic Radiation Force Imaging, Virtual Touch Tissue Imaging and Virtual Touch Tissue Quantification on the Acuson S2000 ultrasound system. Similar to a physical palpation exam, these technologies represent a new dimension of diagnostic information by interrogating the mechanical strain properties or stiffness of tissue, which may be correlated with pathology.
Complementing the strain analysis is Virtual Touch Tissue Quantification, which provides a numerical value related to tissue stiffness at a precise anatomical location. The application is highly promising in identifying early stages of liver diseases causing cirrhosis. Early studies show that it proved extremely sensitive in diagnosing fibrosis and distinguishing it from normal liver and cirrhosis.
