NetApp to expand object-based storage portfolio with Bycast purchase

NetApp has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Bycast, a privately held company headquartered in Vancouver, in an undisclosed all-cash transaction.

Bycast develops object-based storage software designed to manage petabyte-scale distributed repositories of images, video and records for enterprises and service providers. Founded more than 10 years ago, Bycast seeks to reduce the administrative burden of managing large quantities of data across multiple geographies, according to the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based NetApp.

Object-based storage is an approach to storing and accessing data based on object names and metadata that describes the content in detail, NetApp said.

Bycast's Vancouver headquarters will become a technology center for NetApp and will be responsible for existing Bycast products and future product development.

The acquisition is expected to close in May 2010, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.
