Covidien revises Mo-99 supply through September
Covidien as posted molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) supply updates through September, and information for the U.S., Europe, Middle East, Africa and Canada. The Canadian National Research Universal (NRU) reactor is currently projected to return to service in mid-August, and the Dutch High Flux Reactor (HFR) in early September, and the resulting Mo-99 supply from each is expected several days after the reactors are back online, said Covidien.
Once HFR returns to service, it will resume its role as a robust Covidien supplier, said the company. Covidien is also in communication with NRU’s Mo-99 processor to obtain the maximum supplemental supply available when it is back online.
In addition, Covidien said that the Belgian BR2 and French OSIRIS reactors are scheduled to be offline for planned maintenance for the majority of September. Covidien has secured additional Mo-99 production cycles from the Polish Maria Reactor in August and September.
Covidien’s projected production of technetium-99m generators in the Americas showed some slight improvements in August. The revised calendar showed significant shortage to generator standing orders from Aug. 23 through Sept. 4 and generator standing order shortage resulting in size reductions from Sept. 5 to Sept. 18. Projections are, as always, subject to change, stated Covidien.
The company has also increased thallium-201(Tl-201) for those procedures where it can be a clinically appropriate substitute and asked physicians to interact frequently with the company to ensure Tl-201 needs are known.
