ACR grants UCLA radiologist Gold Medal
The American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded breast imaging specialist Lawrence W. Bassett, MD, the Gold Medal, ACR’s highest honor for distinguished and extraordinary service in radiology.
Currently the Iris Cantor Professor of Breast Imaging in the department of radiological sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Bassett has directed UCLA’s breast imaging program for 35 years. Bassett also conducts research at the Jonsson Cancer Center at UCLA and is active in training fellows, residents and medical students.
In 1983, Bassett helped found ACR’s Committee on Breast Imaging and later chaired the group. He completed his medical degree at University of California, Irvine, before training as a radiology resident at UCLA.
"I'm very proud to be recognized by my peers for my contributions to breast imaging and radiology," Bassett said. "Receiving this award is an incredible honor for a radiologist."
Prior to joining UCLA, Basset served as a captain and battalion surgeon for the U.S. Marines in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.
