AMA names Madara CEO, exec VP

The American Medical Association (AMA) has tapped James L. Madara, MD, as the association’s new executive vice president (VP) and CEO. He will assume the position July 1.

Previously, Madara served as CEO of the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the Timmie professor and chair of pathology and laboratory medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Madara also was longest acting dean of the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, serving for 35 years.

“Having overseen a $1.6 billion integrated academic medical center, Madara understands many of the complex clinical, academic and business-related issues confronting medicine and healthcare today,” said Ardis D. Hoven, MD, chair of the AMA Board of Trustees.

Madara specializes in epithelial cell biology and gastrointestinal diseases and has published more than 200 original pages of research, earning both national and international awards for his work.

Additionally, Madara has also served as president of the American Board of Pathology, editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Pathology and received a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health. Most recently, however, Madara was senior advisor for Leavitt Partners, a healthcare consulting firm founded by Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt.
