Undermining mammography misconceptions
With the high political contention that surrounds the Affordable Care Act (ACA), it’s no surprise that numerous rumors have been circulating about what types of care and procedures are and are not covered under the statute. In particular, many believe that the ACA restricts one’s ability to get a mammogram. FactCheck.org recently debunked this myth, addressing the growing concern that women over the age of 70 will not be covered by Obamacare for mammography.
In fact, the website explains, the law requires private insurers to cover mammography every one to two years for women beginning at the age of 40 with no cost-sharing. Medicare fully pays for mammograms once every 12 months with no upper age limit. ACA thus increases coverage of mammograms for women, depending on their previous insurance. Misrepresentations of the 2009 United States Preventive Services Task Force recommendations for mammography screening have largely led to this confusion.
