Advanced Visualization adds a new dimension
Vendors are bringing a wide array of 3D imaging tools to RSNA, including integrated displays, enterprise platforms, and advanced workstations for multiple modalities including orthopedics, mammography, chest, and lung. Also look for software and clinical solutions that feature improved accessibility, integration, and functionality.
3mensio Medical Imaging BV (Booth #5104) is featuring the 3viseon 3D imaging workstation, a turnkey solution that enables large medical data sets, generated by CT and MRI scanners, to be displayed as a 3D reconstruction using standard PC technology. Providing easy-to-use tools to communicate more easily with referring physicians, it will save time while remaining affordable. 3viseon can be extended with several options ranging from stereoscopy to clinical applications.
Barco (Booth #4729) is showcasing Voxar 3D Enterprise, a major enhancement to its Voxar 3D software designed to provide rapid enterprisewide access to advanced visualization. Using server-based technology and high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), Voxar 3D Enterprise dramatically accelerates the speed at which users can load, review, report, and communicate patient cases with clinical colleagues. Whether the user is working on a high-performance diagnostic workstation or a standard PC, the system delivers large volumetric studies faster and provides real-time interaction with studies, such as multi-phase CT cardiac studies. Voxar 3D Enterprise can be integrated into enterprisewide PACS environments, providing a rapid, one-click integration with the advanced visualization tools of Voxar 3D. New color-augmented modalities deliver larger data sets with richer content. New techniques, such as 3D imaging, Doppler ultrasound, CAD, and PET-CT fusion, are improving the workflow to provide better clinical decision-making.
BRIT Systems (Booth #1915) is launching its multi-modality mammography workstation, BRIT Vision, for use with any FDA-cleared full-field digital mammography system or with digitized film from a film-screen system. The tools developed for mammography will be made available in all other BRIT Systems diagnostic and viewers. In addition to serving as an easy-to-use, multi-purpose viewer for any DICOM conformant exam, the BRIT Vision workstation will provide mammography-specific reading tools, including support for CAD overlays, over-reading tools with statistics, special hot-keys and icons, and animated hanging protocols. Color images, particularly those from ultrasound, can be viewed on the workstation with BRIT’s standard two-portrait grayscale and one-landscape color monitor configuration.
BRIT also is introducing a new set of PACS-native 3D tools. Improved and more powerful MPRs, MIPs, volume rendering, and all basic 3D imaging tools, along with more efficient viewing tools, are now native applications on all BRIT Vision workstations. Throughout the facility or enterprise, any BRIT Vision workstation can now provide advanced 3D rendering tools that were previously available only on third-party 3D software. Cerner (Booth #8513) is highlighting specialty clinical visualization software for mammography and orthopedics. Also featured is MultiMedia Foundation, which integrates digital images and objects within an electronic medical record, compiling a comprehensive patient record from such data as ECG waveforms, documents, photographs, and video images.
GE Healthcare (Booth #7158) is releasing its Centricity AW Suite 2 (Advantage Workstation) and combining AW software with Centricity PACS. Centricity AW Suite 2 offers five optional modules such as CardIQ (cardiology), Advanced Lung Analysis (oncology), Advanced Vessel Analysis (cardio-vascular), Auto Bone, and CT Colonography. The addition of these modules over the base volume share has completely digitized the diagnostic process, providing capabilities to manage large complex sets of patient data. Through advanced visualization and analysis tools, clinicians can now manage increasingly sophisticated data available from today’s diagnostic imaging modalities, to speed diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, radiologists no longer have to move between workstations to view and manipulate interactive volumetric data sets. Specific tools for CT, MR, PET/CT, and x-ray are now fully enabled on any networked PACS PC, with the benefits of 3D imaging.
Imaging3 (Booth #4387) is demonstrating its prototype Dominion system. The Dominion is a mobile, three-dimensional, real-time medical diagnostic technology designed for 3D real-time fluoroscopic imaging, as well as emulating other medical imaging technology, such as CT scans, much more cheaply.
Orthocrat (Booth #8945) is debuting the latest version of its digital orthopedic surgical planning and templating solution, TraumaCad 3D, which will expand upon the feature-rich, user-friendly, and web-based functionality of the original version by introducing a 3D modeling capability. As part of its improved functionality, TraumaCad 3D will feature 3D templating for spinal surgery; 3D templating for joint arthoplasty; postoperative measurements for THR; cup abduction, anteversion, and wear measurement; multiple osteotomy limb deformity correction; advanced hip deformity analysis; extended subspecialty-specific measurement toolset; automatic calibration; and the largest (automatically updating) template library.
TeraRecon (Booth #2509) is introducing the iNtuition platform architecture for the Aquarius suite of products. iNtuition is designed to deliver integration of advanced imaging workflow into the healthcare enterprise and features an improved and more powerful central rendering resource in the form of the VolumePro 2000, based on the company’s FALCON chipset. This new platform architecture forms the backbone for future releases of the company’s Aquarius product line and provides improved throughput and a customizable workflow that can be tailored to individual reading and reporting needs. Tera-Recon is demonstrating the iNtuition workflow of “Automate, Validate, and Read,” designed to minimize the manual interaction required to bring a volumetric examination to the point where a physician can make a definitive diagnostic or therapy planning decision.
Version 4.0 of the Aquarius Workstation will be demonstrated (release planned for March 2007), featuring a transition to the iNtuition platform for basic review and image management. Future development of advanced applications on the Aquarius Workstation also will be performed using the iNtuition architecture, leading in time to a fully client-server advanced image management station, which can be configured to meet the specific user interface needs of each clinical specialty. Aquarius VLE server will utilize Tera-Recon’s VolumePro 2000 rendering boards for handling up to 27,200 images concurrently with real-time performance and enhanced image quality.

V3D-Calcium Scoring determines and quantifies calcified plaque accumulation in coronary arteries. V3D-Colon is a clinically validated system with FDA clearance for patient screening for the detection of colon cancer.

Enhancements to both the flagship software Vitrea, and web-based ViTALConnect, combined with additional accessibility options, provides a synergistic solution that simplifies complex clinical workflows and enables easy communication throughout the enterprise. Vitrea Version 3.9 offers new usability features as well as cardiac and neurological enhancements. Some highlights of the release include the ability to manage more complex data — up to 3,000 slices using a 64-bit operating system, and Vessel Walk, a new tool used for comprehensive review of coronary vessels in MPRs.
