New partnership seeks to streamline AI integration into lung cancer screening

A new partnership between Sirona Medical and RevealDX could streamline the process of AI integration into the clinical practice of lung nodule assessments.

The partnership will combine Nines' FDA-cleared automated measurement tool (recently acquired by Sirona) with Sirona's core Workspace platform and the CE-marked RevealAI-Lung decision support software of RevealDX, pending its anticipated FDA approval in early 2023.

In a prepared statement, Mohit Naik, MD, President of Hackensack Radiology Group (HRG) spoke about how the partnership could benefit patients and providers.

"There are several limitations to lung cancer screening programs. The most notable are inefficient methods for nodule detection and measurement as well as suboptimal specificity for lung cancer detection," Naik said. "Sirona Medical is in a unique position to solve both of these challenges.”

According to the release, the tool can help to streamline radiologist workflows without a massive IT overhaul, as the Sirona+RevealDX lung workflow is embedded into the Sirona Workspace and can be integrated as an ‘overlay’ into practices' existing PACS and RIS systems.

According to Lauren Nicola, MD, CEO at Triad Radiology Associates and Chief Medical Officer of RevealDX, the new partnership will simplify the AI implementation process.

"One often cited reason for delayed adoption of AI by radiologists is that it can create more work for the radiologist, often with questionable impact on patient care," Nicola said in a statement. "We're developing this in response to a need for AI applications to be seamlessly integrated into radiologist workflow.”

The integration will enable one-click measurement of a lung nodule’s short and long axis in addition to its malignancy Similarity Index (mSI). It includes autoformatted phrasing that can be placed instantly into a report’s findings without extra dictation and can also auto-insert a Lung-RADS score and follow-up recommendations into management worklists.

Sirona is set to showcase the workflow solution at this year’s annual RSNA meeting (booth #4113) being held November 27 to December 1.
