Clinical Information Systems

Regional health information organizations (RHIOs) may top the list of buzzwords in the clinical information systems category at HIMSS 2006. Vendors are launching multiple solutions to support, nurture and connect RHIOs. Moving down from the macro level, exhibitors are touting enhanced integration between the electronic medical record and imaging. Other tools to help healthcare operate better, smarter, safer and faster include closed loop medication systems and dashboards. PACS and RIS remain hot items. Look for new enhancements as well as niche solutions geared for the imaging center as well as cardiovascular information systems and new oncology information systems that support all facets of cancer care.

Guardian Technologies International, Inc. (booth #3616) is announcing what it calls "a breakthrough in image processing with the potential to improve the diagnostic characteristics of medical images which should result in easier and speedier diagnoses, decreased misreads and greater workflow efficiency for the diagnosing physician."

The technology, built on Guardian's 3i core imaging analysis engine, is able to detect and distinguish different types of organic compounds contained in images from a wide array of sources, including x-ray, CT and hyper spectral data types. Since the human body is made of organic compounds, the adaptation of the scientific principles behind Guardian's PinPoint threat detection technology to medical image analysis follows naturally. Guardian has discovered and implemented a method that identifies a unique signature within images - like a latent fingerprint that is unique to individual types of materials. The two dominant interactions in this process are the photoelectric and Compton effects. Guardian's software decodes the encoded signatures, making accurate identification of specific items within images possible.

Guardian has initiated research and development activities focused on the implementation of its new Intelligent Imaging Informatics (3i) technology in the following three healthcare related areas: Extended Visualization Imaging Tools, Multi-Modal Synthesis/Image Fusion and CAD.
