HIMSS: HMS launches HMS Connex, showcase ambulatory EHR

Healthcare company Healthcare Management Systems (HMS) revealed its new interoperability product HMS Connex at the 2010 annual HIMSS conference in Atlanta. HMS Connex will enable the exchange of clinical data between third party systems, health information exchanges and public registries while assisting in qualifying for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 HITECH stimulus funds, according to the company.

Built around IT company Mirth’s open source technology platform and customized for the HMS product suite, HMS Connex is designed to help customers achieve Stage 1 meaningful use interoperability requirements; specifically reporting hospital quality measures to CMS, exchanging key clinical information among providers of care, submitting lab results to public health agencies and submitting data to immunization registries, according to HMS, of Nashville.

According to the company, HMS Connex also provides customers with a stable platform that can be leveraged for future data exchange needs whether it is within or outside of the hospital including exchange of information with external partners, public registries or community regional health information organizations.

Other products that HMS highlighted at its booth this year were its HMS Emergency Department System and HMS Ambulatory EHR. HMS and health IT company Medhost have developed an integrated emergency department (ED) system for the HMS enterprisewide solution.

According to HMS, Medhost’s automatic charge capture prevents lost charges and provides enhanced financial performance by calculating charges as care is documented. The system’s real-time notifications help keep ED clinical and staff better informed about each patient’s status, HMS added.

HMS also recently announced the addition of a physician EMR and practice management solution. According to the company, HMS Ambulatory EHR is integrated with the HMS enterprise-wide hospital application suite and will be part of HMS’ 2010 CCHIT re-certification process.

Key benefits, according to the company, include:

  • Integration to the HMS hospital information system;
  • E-prescribing;
  • Fully web-based for anytime, anywhere access by clinicians;
  • Clinical data access for decision making, streamlined physician workflow and ease of use;
  • Ability to quickly and easily add or modify templates per physician practice;
  • Ease of use;
  • Transcription integration; and
  • On-site or remote training options.
