HIMSS 2005 EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS: A CLOSER LOOK

Wondering what informative educational sessions to participate in this year at HIMSS to learn more about the multi-facets of healthcare IT? The list is long and packed with topics including EHRs, ambulatory care, ROI, e-prescribing, patient safety, governance, infrastructure and clinical process improvement.

Monday, February 14th

To gain some insight on how to gauge the ongoing success of your PACS implementation, attend at 10 a.m. "PACS - Is it a Measurable Success?" Also at 10 a.m., James Thompson, MD, medical director of informatics at Central DuPage Health will host "Can You Read Me Now? Wi-Fi and Cellular Delivery of the EHR."

"Views from the Top" sessions address current industry issues and trends. One takes place Monday morning at 11:15 a.m. titled "The High Cost of Healthcare: How It Can Be Controlled!" Also at 11:15 a.m., Leon Leach, executive VP/CAO, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, will lead the session titled "IT Investments: Can IT's Value Be Enhanced?"

For more information on paperless medical charts, at 11:15 a.m. attend "Don't Forget the Last 100 Feet: Devices for the EHR." Also at this time, "It's a Digital World!" will feature speakers from Nebraska Heart Institute Hospital sharing their care delivery model and networking technologies to utilize digital technology to create improvements in efficiency and patient care.

If after lunch you're craving some higher learning about HIPAA, sit in on the 12:30 p.m. session called "Why is the HIPAA Security Rule Necessary?" which is hosted by Keith Fricke, data security administrator at Cleveland Clinic Health System.


Tuesday, February 15th

If while sipping on that fresh cup of morning coffee you feel like learning more about integrating electronic images into an EHR system, at 9:45 a.m. check out "Seamless Transitions: Integrating Diagnostic Images Directly into the EHR," lead by Kevin W. McEnery, MD, associate division head, Informatics, University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

If your forte is mammography - or you want to learn more about the emerging field of digital mammography - you may want to sit in on the 1 p.m. session "Understanding Digital Mammography." However, if interoperability and integrating the healthcare enterprise (IHE) is your thing - and you're seeking information on inter-system and inter-vendor data interchange - HIMSS is offering at "Negotiation and Implementing the IHE" at 1 p.m.

At 2:15 p.m., "Setting Standards: The Ugly Duckling Becomes a Swan," will be offered for those who want to learn more about the current state of activity in standardization, and the various efforts of standardization at both the federal and industry level.


Wednesday, February 16th

Educational sessions commence bright and early on Wednesday.

At 8:30 a.m., "The Radar on Vendor Performance 2004" examines new products, trends and new information. Speakers will be identifying "what's working and what's not."

Related to patient safety, Scott Young, MD, director of Health IT, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, will host at 9:45 a.m. a session titled "AHRQ's $60M Investment in Healthcare IT: Improving Healthcare Quality."


Thursday, February 17th

The momentum of the show is not slowing down yet - Thursday promises some interesting educational sessions. One, which will be presented by John Hummel, senior VP of IS and CIO at Sutter Health, will provide insight into how to build, budget and staff for a successful project management office. Beginning at 9:45 a.m., the session is called, "The Secret to CIO Successes: Building a Successful Project Management Office."
