X-rays are known to play a vital role in society—especially when it comes to screening passengers at the airport for safety.
Live Science says that although x-rays do catch many items that are not permitted, there is a mental bias and a satisfaction of search (SOS). This is when a person screening images feels satisfied after finding a problematic item and moving on to the next image. This system could lead to mistakes when identifying other prohibited items, which could lead to catastrophic errors.
SOS also occurs in the healthcare system, in an example where a doctor may miss a tumor because an image first showed signs of pneumonia.
A pilot program in Brussels, Belgium; Bristol, England; and Calgary, Canada, will screen passengers in remote areas, so seemingly countless other things happening in front of security personnel do not distract them. This will help to minimize the effects of SOS.
