Is CT scanning accurate enough to diagnose pleural mesothelioma?
Scottish researchers conducted a study that examined the accuracy of CT scans when diagnosing pleural mesothelioma, a rare and malignant cancer caused by asbestos according to the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance.
The researchers tested 300 patients and CT correctly identified pleural mesothelioma only 58 percent of the time. In an effort to improve diagnostic accuracy, researchers suggest combining CT with positron emission tomography (PET).
The study was published in Lung Cancer, and tests were conducted at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland.
