Siemens showing syngo BLADE, latest in patient care applications at ISMRM

Siemens Medical Solutions is showcasing its syngo BLADE, the newest in its Tim (Total imaging matrix) technology-powered magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) software, at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) 14th Scientific Meeting & Exhibition this week in Seattle. BLADE is designed for imaging in neurological and orthopedic procedures even in cases of severe movement through its motion correction application.

syngo BLADE was designed for pediatric use — although it has not yet been tested for infant or fetus safety — as well as difficult-to-manage patients in neurological and orthopedic imaging. By continuously acquiring low resolution images, this application measures and corrects any motion, providing clear images. Because of this, medical professionals can focus on reducing sedation rates in pediatric and anxious patients. This application is available on all Tim systems, including the MAGNETOM Avanto, MAGNETOM Symphony, MAGNETOM Espree and MAGNETOM Trio, the company said.

The Tim-powered suite of syngo applications also includes:
  • syngo BEAT — offers tools to diagnose cardiac  disease, allowing professionals to easily change parameters with a click of the mouse — from 2D to 3D, breath-hold to free-breathing, and morphology to  functional or tissue characterization;

  • syngo Expert-i — giving physicians and experts the  ability to interact remotely during the MRI examination from virtually  anywhere in their network, making it possible to address difficult clinical  questions via a networked personal computer while a patient is being  scanned;

  • syngo GRAPPA — a Parallel Imaging Technique that  delivers high image quality and speeds up most exams, including spine imaging  for small children or patients with severe back pain as well as high temporal  resolution in cardiac imaging even in double oblique  orientations;

  • syngo REVEAL — a body diffusion technique that  provides additional information for differentiation of lesions throughout the  entire body, offering high sensitivity to potential malignant lesions;

  • syngo SPACE — for 3D imaging with contrasts, SPACE can  be used for complex spine, head, inner ear, abdomen and pelvis cases, and can  replace multiple 2D acquisitions; and

  • syngo SWI (Susceptibility Weighted  Imaging) — a technique that reveals blood products and venous  structures.

The nuclear imaging isotope shortage of molybdenum-99 may be over now that the sidelined reactor is restarting. ASNC's president says PET and new SPECT technologies helped cardiac imaging labs better weather the storm.

CMS has more than doubled the CCTA payment rate from $175 to $357.13. The move, expected to have a significant impact on the utilization of cardiac CT, received immediate praise from imaging specialists.

The newly cleared offering, AutoChamber, was designed with opportunistic screening in mind. It can evaluate many different kinds of CT images, including those originally gathered to screen patients for lung cancer.
