ASRT patient-centered care series focuses on serving diverse populations

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The American Society of Radiologic Technologists has launched Patient-centered Care for Diverse Populations, a new online educational series that highlights strategies and tactics for delivering high-quality care for different patient populations.

Featuring 10 modules worth 12 continuing education credits, the series provides in-depth information about the needs and challenges of patient populations and how to engage with them. The modules focus on a wide variety of topics including caring for pediatric and elderly patients, working with patients with physical and intellectual disabilities, health literacy, equitable patient care, caring for patients with chronic and infectious diseases and understanding cultural differences.

In addition, the series features a linguistics module that includes translations of basic health care commands used by radiologic technologists. More than 20 phrases are available in German, French, Spanish and Farsi, and each is pronounced and spelled out on screen so users can hear the phrases and repeat them.

An institutional, non-CE credit version is available in CD format and includes four posters that feature information about different patient populations. One poster describes age appropriate treatment information, and the three other posters include tips about family roles, communication, spirituality and death rituals.

According to Craig St. George, B.S., R.T.(R)(VI), ASRT director of online education, the series provides in-depth information about patients’ health disparities, their belief systems and cultural norms. “As patient populations evolve, health care professionals will need to develop communication and work strategies to successfully provide care for patients. The series highlights strategies and tactics for all health care professionals to create a comforting and welcoming environment for every patient.”

The modules are all approved for Category A continuing education credit and accepted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Radiologic technologists who successfully complete all the modules will receive a document from ASRT recognizing their achievement.
