A radiology provider based in northeastern New Jersey is contacting patients after an unidentified party gained access to one of its imaging servers.

Hoboken Radiology was first informed of potentially suspicious activity on its medical server back in November 2020. Shortly after learning of the event, Hoboken launched an investigation with a third-party computer forensic specialist and pinpointed “unauthorized connections” between June 2, 2019, and Dec. 1, 2020.

The server in question housed information such as patient names, birthdates, treatment dates, referring physicians, patient ID numbers, and images and descriptions, among other data. It did not, however, contain Social Security numbers, payment, financial or insurance information, the radiology provider cautioned.

“Hoboken takes this incident and the security of personal information seriously,” the provider said in a statement published May 28. “While Hoboken has no evidence that any personal information was subject to actual or attempted misuse, it encourages anyone who thinks their information may have been impacted to monitor financial accounts and notify their bank immediately if they detect unauthorized or unusual activity.”

While the investigation is currently ongoing, Hoboken is notifying patients who may have been impacted and reporting the incident to state and federal regulators.
