Washington, D.C. – The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) today commended the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) legislation, which ensures the United States secures the most effective trade agreements possible to advance medical imaging and patient access to care.

“As markets continue to expand around the world, creating further demand for medical imaging equipment, MITA is hopeful that the TPA legislation will improve the global regulatory environment and ensure that American manufacturers stay at the forefront of innovation for the benefit of millions of patients,” said Andy Dhokai, MITA’s Director of Federal Relations.

The bill was brought to the House floor under the leadership of House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and comes on the heels of TPA legislation that passed in the Senate at the end of last month.

MITA is currently working with U.S. regulators and negotiators on medical imaging equipment provisions in the pending Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreements. Passage of the TPA will enable the TPP and TTIP agreements to move forward, so in turn medical imaging manufacturers and other American companies will be able to hire more American workers, pay competitive wages, and help grow local economies. The TPA negotiating objectives provide that negotiators reach trade agreements with regulatory transparency and accountability.
