Australian town's 1st PET-CT facility brings comfort to family

Mackay—a city on Australia’s east coast—received its first PET-CT scan facilities, helping families who were forced to travel more than four hours north to Townsville to undergo the imaging procedures.

Anna and Col Cameron were forced to make the trek every three months to receive scans after he was diagnosed with stage IV bowel cancer last April, the Daily Mercury reports.

When Col was first diagnosed, the couple spent three weeks away from home, leaving their business behind.

"To be able to have treatment and go home and feel comfortable in a familiar environment surrounded by the love and support of family and friends and not to have the added stress of travelling, is very beneficial, as often patients and their families are struggling and need time to come to terms with the diagnosis without the added pressure of being in unfamiliar territory,” said Ann Cameron.
