Contracts: DR Systems, Elekta, Foresight Imaging, Sony Electronics, TeraMedica, Varian
DR Systems announced 12 new contracts with healthcare facilities for its Unity RIS/PACS, totaling more than $7.4 million. The contract signings came toward the end of 2006, and are from a variety of institutions, from diagnostic imaging centers to large hospitals. The largest contract was for more than $1.1 million, with the smallest contract at just over $200,000. The 12 new facilities awarding the contracts are:
El Camino Hospital has installed the Sony Electronics’ high-definition IP-based IPELA visual communications system. The facility is using the system for live, two-way conference with City of Hope, a medical center in southern California, through which cancer physicians can share data on cases involving difficult-to-treat liver tumors. The HD technology allows physicians to remotely share images at levels of precise detail, clarity and resolution not possible with standard definition, from individual blood vessels in a surgical video to the granular details of a pathology slide. The Sony HD visual communications system, model PCS-HG90, in combination with the PCSA-CHG90 pan-tilt-zoom camera, can transfer HD-resolution video and stereo audio over an IP network. The system may also have potential future uses in a broader range of medical educational applications.
Elekta inked a deal to supply Velindre Cancer Centre, near Cardiff in South East Wales, U.K., with advanced medical equipment and software for intensity modulated and image guided radiation therapy (IMRT and IGRT). With the first system to be delivered in the spring of 2007, this replacement will commence treatment of patients in early 2008. This will be followed by a second unit scheduled to be introduced into service later that year which will increase the overall complement of linear accelerators to six. The Velindre Cancer Centre, part of the Velindre NHS Trust, have ordered two Elekta Synergy systems, equipped with integrated high-resolution 3D imaging capability for IMRT and IGRT, methods for irradiating tumors with significantly improved precision and accuracy. One of these systems will replace old equipment and one will provide additional capacity at the hospital. As part of the assignment, Elekta will also supply MOSAIQ information management software and system integration from Elekta-owned IMPAC Medical Systems.
Foresight Imaging has signed an agreement with St. Louis, Mo.-based SSM Healthcare to supply the TIMS DICOM System for their DICOM conversion and PACS connectivity needs. SSM Healthcare will purchase more than 50 systems.
Meriter Hospital announced that TeraMedica’s Evercore - Clinical Information Manager is now fully installed. Evercore was intended to integrate all of Meriter’s clinical objects including medical and non medical images and distribute them in a lightweight format within the facility’s Epic Systems Electronic Medical Record. EPIC making them available to attending health care professionals via web accessible devices. Meriter Hospital is a 448-bed non-profit community teaching hospital that provides comprehensive health services for residents of southern Wisconsin and areas of northwest Illinois.
Toshiba America Medical Systems announced a multi-year, multi-system agreement with Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) in Boston. Through the deal, BWH has installed Toshiba’s Aquilion 64 CFX CT system. The Aquilion CFX will play an important role in BWH’s ongoing evaluation and validation of cardiac CT as a tool for diagnosing early stage heart disease without the use of interventional procedures that can cause greater risk for the patient, Toshiba said.
The new Beacon Hospital in Sandyford, Dublin has ordered a Trilogy Tx image-guided radiosurgery system from Varian Medical Systems. The device will reside in Beacon Cancer Centre, a partnership of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Cancer Centers and Triad Hospitals, Inc., located at Beacon Hospital. The new system, which was ordered in December and will be installed and put into clinical use later this year, is part of a comprehensive oncology program at Beacon Hospital that includes state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, day unit oncology and surgical services.
