Former head of radiology on trial for alleged rape

The trial of the former head of radiology at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, who is accused of group sexual assault of a woman, got underway this week. 

Stephan Probst, 46, is alleged to have sexually assaulted a younger female in his penthouse in August of 2020. Wendy Devera, 30, Probst’s alleged accomplice, is also facing charges. 

The victim, whose name has been concealed for privacy purposes, told a court Thursday that she and Devera met on an online dating site. Although the victim was in a relationship with a man, she said she wanted to experiment sexually with a woman. She and Devera made plans to meet at Probst’s penthouse. 

Prior to meeting, the victim informed Devera that she was not interested in being with another man. Despite communicating this, Probst was at the penthouse when she arrived. She said that Probst made her a drink, while Devera offered her ecstasy, which she turned down. 

Although she refused the drugs, she told the court she started to feel strange while in the spa with Devera, as if she had been drugged. The two were soon joined by Probst, who tried to physically engage with the victim. The victim said she pushed him away and went to another room to get dressed. 

There, she said she started to feel worse, like she was unable to control her body. Devera helped walk her to the main bedroom, where the victim said Probst rejoined them and proceeded to rape her with the help of Devera, according to local news outlets reporting on the case. 

The victim told the court it took multiple attempts for her to leave the penthouse under her own power. 

At the time of the incident, Probst was the head of the department of radiology and the nuclear imaging division at Jewish General Hospital. He is still listed online as the chief of nuclear imaging on the Integrated Health and Social Services University Network for West-Central Montreal’s (CIUSSS West-Central Montreal) website.
