IBA to provide Virginia hospital with proton therapy system
Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) in Hampton, Va., has signed a contract with Ion Beam Applications (IBA) to provide a large proton therapy system.
The Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium-based IBA said it will provide proton therapy for the facility, including five treatment rooms—four gantries (isocentric rotational frames) and one fixed beam room—with the options for patient positioning and the IBA’s Universal Nozzle technologies.
HUPTI, which broke ground in July 2007, will treat more than 2,000 patients a year and will focus primarily on prostate cancer, but will also treat patients with breast, lung, eye and pediatric cancers. The center will take about three years to start operation, with the first patient expected to be treated in 2010, IBA said.
