Kettering network implements $50M e-health system from Epic

Kettering Health Network, a Dayton, Ohio-based six hospital system, has launched a $50 million electronic health information system (eHIS) project with Epic Systems.

KHN officials said that the Epic eHIS will be live first at Sycamore Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, in 2010. They expect the entire six hospital network, including outpatient facilities, to be live by June 2011.

"There will be no need to interpret handwriting on orders, and there will be no concern about inconsistency in the use of abbreviated terms," said Charles Watson, DO, chief medical information officer at Kettering. "It makes all records available in one place, so you don't have to hunt down results and reports."

The health network said that the eHIS also will help the hospitals coordinate billing and determine appropriate discount eligibility for patients. Also, there will be password and thumb print for authentication for users.
