Radiologist arrested for alleged lewd acts that were caught on camera

A West Virginia radiologist was arrested last week after allegedly “committing an act of sexual gratification” at a public establishment.

Mike Maroney, MD, who has served as a Republican senator for the state since 2016, was arrested on two misdemeanors—indecent exposure and disorderly conduct—after staff at Gumby’s Cigarette & Beer World in Glen Dale caught him committing the lewd act on surveillance footage.

At the time of the incident, Maroney was alone in the venue’s video lottery room, according to Marshall County Prosecuting Attorney Joe Canestraro.

This isn’t Maroney’s first run in with the law. In 2019, he was arrested for his alleged involvement with a prostitution ring. He is said to have been in communication with an accused prostitute numerous times. Seven other men were also implicated in the allegations. After multiple delays in the case, the charges were eventually dropped in 2021—more than a year after his arrest.

Prior to the incident, Maroney served for the state Senate Health and Human Resources Committee but was removed from his position Wednesday. Leadership involved in the decision to remove Maroney as chair said the move was “to give him appropriate time to dedicate to his personal issues.”

“Like all citizens, Senator Maroney is entitled to full due process as this matter works its way through the legal system. We join in prayer for our friend Mike and his family as he deals with these issues,” Senate President Craig Blair, a friend of Maroney, said in a statement on the matter. “While the charges are still under investigation, if true, this allegation is obviously not up to the standard of what we expect from our elected leaders in the State Senate of West Virginia.”

Maroney recently lost his bid for a third four-year term and is serving in his final months as senator. If found guilty of the charges, he could serve up to a year in jail and be forced to pay small fines.
