Mumbai man sucked into MRI machine and killed, according to police
Rajesh Maru, 32, from India died Jan. 27 after being sucked into an MRI machine while visiting one of his relatives at the government-owned BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai, according to a recent report from CBS News.
According to Mumbai police reports, Maru was yanked toward the MRI machine by magnetic force after going into the room carrying an oxygen cylinder for his sick relative. Preliminary police reports suggested that Maru had died from inhaling liquid oxygen that leaked from the cylinder. He died within 10 minutes from a collapsed lung, according to Maru's postmortem report.
"We have arrested a doctor and another junior staff member under section 304 of the Indian penal code for causing death due to negligence," said Mumbai police spokesman Deepak Deoraj to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The victim's uncle said Maru had been asked to carry the cylinder by a junior staff member who assured him the machine was switched off, according to CBS News. The state government of Maharashtra of which Mumbai is the capital agreed to give Maru's family a compensation of 500,000 rupees ($7,870).
