AHA bestows $2.5M to St. Lukes for outcomes research training
Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Mo., has received a $2.5 million grant from the American Heart Association (AHA) to finance four years of research and to initiate a new fellowship training program in outcomes research for patients with heart disease and stroke.
The grant will enable Saint Luke’s to train as many as six physicians in outcomes research, which studies the results of treatments and interventions to refine and improve quality of care and patient outcomes, the hospital said.
The AHA chose three centers in addition to Saint Luke’s to receive grants: Duke University in Durham, N.C.; Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif.; and the University of California-Los Angeles Medical Center. The four centers were awarded a total of $14.5 million to establish the Outcomes Research Centers initiative to provide a national network for cardiovascular and stroke research focusing on the end results, or outcomes, of healthcare for people with or at risk for heart disease and stroke.
The AHA center at Saint Luke’s will be directed by John Spertus, MD, director of cardiovascular outcomes research, and co-directed by David Cohen, MD, director of cardiovascular research. They will lead programs studying how best to measure and improve the appropriateness of angioplasty in eligible patients and how best to inform those patients of their outcomes and choices at the time of treatment, according to St. Luke’s.
