Varian Medical Systems closes on Zmed acquisition

Varian Medical Systems Inc. on Oct. 27 completed its acquisition of radiation oncology software and accessories supplier Zmed Inc.

 Varian Medical Systems paid approximately $35.5 million for the privately-held company. Zmed supplies radiation oncology software and accessories for ultrasound-based, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic radiation treatments and image management.

 Zmed is expected to add revenues of $16 million to $18 million to Varian Medical Systems' coffers in FY04. Zmed now is part of Varian's Oncology Systems business segment and will continue to operate from facilities in Ashland, Mass.
