Eleventh annual National Mammography Day set for next week
October 17 marks National Mammography Day as part of the National Cancer Awareness Month program.
Since 1993, the day is marked as a reminder for millions of women across the nation to have an annual breast exam. Participating mammography facilities, all accredited by the ACR (American College of Radiology), offer free or reduced-fee mammograms. The ACR coordinates national mammography day in conjunction with the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Board of Sponsors.
Mobile mammography units also will visit underserved areas, giving uninsured or underinsured women the opportunity to get a mammogram.
Each year, an estimated 180,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Guidelines suggest annual screening mammography for women over the age of 40.
