FDA clears Access Scientific safety introducer for vascular procedures

Access Scientific has received FDA clearance for its MicroAccess Wand, a safety introducer, which enables clinicians to insert a sheath or catheter into the peripheral vasculature.

The San Diego-based company said that the devices combine components of the older, Modified Seldinger Technique into a unitary device that provides safer over-wire vascular access.

The first clinical sites will begin using the device immediately, now that it has received FDA clearance, according to Steve Bierman, MD, CEO of Access Scientific.

The company expects that MicroAccess WAND will be used primarily in interventional radiology suites and cardiac catheterization labs. Subsequent iterations, such as the peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) Wand and Power Wand that are now in development, are designed to be used by vascular nurse specialists for insertion of PICC and extended-dwell peripheral IVs.
