RSNA: Laitek offers tailored data migration solutions
Data migration services company, Laitek, presented its techniques for the movement of data at the Radiological Society of North America annual conference (RSNA) in Chicago last week.
Laitek was previously known as a software-oriented shop, said Laitek Vice President Larry Ranahan, who explained that the group moved into data migration about five years ago.
“We specialize in rapid data migration," said Ranahan. “When a hospital or facility is replacing or moving to a new system, we come in and apply different techniques in the movement of the data. We have sustained transfer rates of over one terabyte of data a day.”
He explained that each legacy system is unique and Laitek builds connectors to plug into each system in order to optimize the flow of data.
Ranahan noted that Laitek has seen a shift in the market from healthcare facilities not just moving data from one system to another, but looking for ways to not have to go through this process multiple times. “No one plans for the cost of data migration,” said Ranahan.
The Semperdata static DICOM archive (SDA), is a long-term, standalone data management solution in the Laitek toolkit that allows for the creation of a complete archive of the legacy system. Semperdata also allows for data cleansing and creates separation between the client and legacy system, according to the Homewood, Il.-based company.
According to Ranahan, Laitek provides solutions that are tailored to each facility, depending on the needs of the client. “We support HL7 outbound messages and we do orders migration and results migration, so we can come in as a turnkey for a client,” he said. “Our concept is that you can support the clinic operations on an ongoing basis without negative impact.”
President of Laitek, Fred Behlen, PhD, said that if a facility has five years of data, it would take roughly one and a half years to migrate the data out of the legacy system using conventional methods. According to Behlen however, the methods that Laitek employes are different. “Our approach is one that puts much less load on the legacy PACS,” he said.
Ranahan offered: “Our ideal client is one that wants us to migrate all the data before going live,” he said. “It’s cleaner, simpler and more cost-effective because two migrations will occur if you do one before and one after. System performance degrades as a result.”
