Storage & Archiving assure smart image access
Healthcare organizations want and need enterprise-wide storage solutions. Storage needs to be used and shared among existing departments within hospitals, as well as utilized between multi-site organizations, independent delivery networks and regional health information networks. Storage vendors proved that this has become easier to implement by featuring technologies that allow any-size healthcare facility to store more intelligently, reduce the complexity of their PACS archive and consolidate information. While the physical component of storage and its cost will always be an important factor to enterprise-wide storage architectures, vendors focused more on their advanced software technologies, such as virtualization software, that allow customers to grow their storage archive as needed. Healthcare organizations also are facing interoperability challenges which are being answered with standardized, DICOM compatible systems that help to both drive down cost and increase the availability of critical data.
Acuo Technologies highlighted its DICOM Services Grid system version 5.0 that enables end-users to better reconcile, distribute, and maintain medical image data. The company said the upgraded software will allow OEM and VAR partners to help their customers be successful in managing the increasing size and flow of medical images. The DICOM Services Grid is platform neutral with improved computing powers so that imaging centers, regional hospitals or hospital networks can better connect, secure, and store their medical images.
Candelis Inc. introduced two product and service add-ons for ImageGrid users and featured the new ImageGrid 1500 PACS appliance that meets the growing demand among healthcare professionals for cost-effective and reliable image and data management. Candelis’ ImageGrid is a line of DICOM industry-standard PACS appliances optimized for digital-image access and routing. It provides image management and highly reliable storage and archive capabilities in a fully-integrated storage server platform.
EMC Corp. showcased technologies and services that allow healthcare organizations to create storage IT infrastructures that incorporate information management and business continuity strategies for high availability, protection, and the quick restore of PACS, clinical, and business applications. For example, EMC’s new Clariion CX3 UltraScale series is designed to deliver maximum healthcare application performance, scalability, reliability and ease-of-use. EMC also highlighted its suite of enterprise input and content management software that provides a mechanism for automating, streamlining, securing and auditing the capture, management, encryption, retention and destruction of digital PACS images.
Hewlett-Packard showcased its Medical Archiving Solution (MAS) that is comprised of hardware, software, and services that deliver fast and cost-effective retrieval of infrequently accessed patient information that must be kept available to clinicians for extended periods of time. The MAS incorporates industry-standard application programming interfaces and DICOM, which allow the system to connect directly to an organization’s existing PACS and patient records applications with no special programming.
IBM Healthcare & Life Sciences highlighted its Grid Medical Archive Solution (GMAS) that allows cardiology, radiology and other digital images to be shared across multiple healthcare sites and securely stored for years. IBM’s GMAS addresses an organization’s exponential growth by helping to establish an enterprise-wide storage system.
InSiteOne introduced its next-generation InDex managed service that provides new capabilities for data management and PACS archiving in addition to DICOM imaging for full compliance with emerging XDS standards.
NetApp highlighted its disk-to-disk (D2D) technology — the NearStore Virtual Tape Library (VTL) — which is a backup appliance that appears as a tape library to a PACS application.
Plasmon showcased its new enterprise class UDO Archive Appliance that has twice the capacity, multi-archive support, enhanced security features and energy efficiencies to give users more security, flexibility and control over their archived data. According to Plasmon, the UDO Archive Appliance integrates with imaging and content management applications to meet the needs of healthcare organizations developing strategies for long-term record retention.
TeraMedica launched its new Evercore VisLite Information Manager that is designed to solving interoperability challenges in the Visible Light (VL) arena. Vislite integrates and manages ophthalmology, surgery, endoscopy, pathology, microcopy and many.
