ASTRO: IBA launches a two-room proton therapy solution
Ion Beam Applications (IBA) has introduced Proteus Nano, a two-room proton therapy solution at the annual meeting of the American Society for Radiology Oncology (ASTRO) in Chicago this week.
The two-room Proteus Nano requires a smaller footprint to house the center and can be added to an existing medical facility resulting in a lower cost, according to IBA, headquartered in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. One of the Proteus Nano treatment rooms is a fixed-beam room, used primarily for patients with head and neck cancers and the other is a gantry treatment room, which allows the proton beam to be delivered to the patient from multiple directions and used primarily in pediatric and complex cases.
Proton therapy uses highly accelerated proton beams to target tumors, releasing energy inside the tumor and killing cancer cells with minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissues, according to IBA.
