Chalk River repairs 98% done, production to begin in July

Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) has reported that Chalk River Laboratories, an Ontario-based National Research Universal (NRU) reactor’s weld repairs are 98 percent complete, and work continues to address a single imperfection identified during the final weld repair.

The organization said that site cleaning, grinding and re-welding are now underway, and upon completion of the repair work, a non-destructive exam will be conducted on the site to confirm acceptance of the final repair.

Activities related to the start-up phase of the NRU return-to-service project are ongoing in parallel to repair activities. AECL estimates that NRU will resume isotope production by the end of July.
