IBA selected for installing new particle therapy facility in Sweden

Skandion Clinic, the clinical center for proton therapy in Sweden, has selected IBA (Ion Beam Applications) for the installation of a particle therapy facility which will be managed by a consortium of seven Swedish counties, representing eight university hospitals.

The clinic has selected IBA for the supply and installation of a particle therapy facility, including a cyclotron, the equipment for two treatment rooms, the installation of a scanning beam nozzle for experimental purposes and other ancillary equipment.

The project amounts to between €40-50 million ($50.5-63.1 million U.S.), and the contract also covers a five year service agreement and all non-clinical operations, said the company. The contract award is, however, subject to an appeal process filed by Varian and Sumitomo Heavy Industries which can typically take four to six months, according to the Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium-based IBA.
