Cedars-Sinai cancer institute to utilize tumor tracking system
The Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles has employed a tumor monitoring system from Calypso Medical Technologies, which is approved for use in radiation therapy for prostate cancer patients.
Prior to radiation treatment, patients undergo a outpatient procedure in which three transponders are implanted into the prostate and communicate with Calypso throughout radiation treatment using radiofrequency waves. This tumor tracking system allows radiation beams to more precisely target the cancer while minimizing potential damage to healthy tissue, and will be studied for body-wide applications, said Cedars-Sinai.
