TomoTherapy delivers rad therapy to U.K. patients

James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, England has begun treating cancer patients via the TomoTherapy HiArt treatment system from radiation therapy provider TomoTherapy.

The CT image-guided intensity modulated radiotherapy (IG-IMRT) system allows for the delivery of radiation in helical rotations around the patient and can be conformed to the shape of the tumor to reduce radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue and critical structures, said the Madison, Wis.-based company. One of the first patients treated with the system was a 55-year-old female patient with breast cancer and an unusual chest anatomy.
