Texas encouraged to mandate 3D mammography coverage
A leader of the Washington, D.C.-based Black Women’s Health Imperative published an op-ed over the weekend urging passage of a bill in Texas that would require all commercial payers in the Lone Star State to cover digital breast tomosynthesis.
The writing comes on the heels of the bill’s passing in the Texas House of Representatives last Friday and ahead of its being taken up by the state’s senate.
“Early detection saves women’s lives,” writes Christy Gamble, JD, DrPH, in the Houston Chronicle. “Yet we still expect women to play Russian roulette with cancer screenings? We can and should close the racial divide on breast cancer mortality by requiring all insurance plans to cover the best possible screening procedure. Doing so has the potential to save the lives of thousands of black women in our community.”
