Imperial College London to open new medical imaging, AI research center
Imperial College London has announced plans to open the London Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Center for Value-Based Healthcare thanks to £10 million ($13 million) in recently awarded funds, according to a university news release published Nov. 6.
The center is funded by U.K. Research and Innovation as part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and will have a team of experts from Imperial College London, King's College London, Queen Mary’s University London and other healthcare partners.
“The London Medical Imaging & Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value-Based Healthcare will train sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms from NHS medical images and patient data, to create tools that will help clinicians speed up and improve diagnosis and care across a number of patient pathways including dementia, heart failure and cancer,” according to the release.
The focus of the center will be on transformation and value-based healthcare, how advanced imaging and AI can be used to improve patient care and will allow the NHS to minimize wasted effort not spent supporting patient care to ultimately reduce costs.
"The Centre will provide a fantastic opportunity to transform 12 different patient pathways by using advanced imaging and AI and help make the products that will substantially improve the experience for our patients and their clinical outcomes. It will also allow us to better utilize the resources within the NHS,” Reza Razavi, PhD, named director of the center, said in a prepared statement.
No official opening date for the center has been released.
