Mirada Solutions' software to assist in PET-CT imaging

The University Hospital of Essen in Germany has agreed to employ Mirada Solutions' software in a combined PET/CT scanner.

Mirada's fusion software offers automated tools to combine medical images from different scanning modalities, such as MRI, CT, positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).

"Within this agreement with Mirada Solutions, we will examine the complementary nature of fusion software with PET/CT hardware fusion, particularly as part of our clinical oncology patient management," said Andreas Bockisch, M.D., Ph.D., director of Essen's department of nuclear medicine.

Essen includes 1,200 in-patient beds in 50 institutes and clinics and has been involved in researching combined PET/CT imaging since October 2001. Mirada's software will address the challenges of multi-modality imaging, such as fusing a series of PET/CT studies from the same patient over time, said Bockisch.

Mirada Solutions, located in Oxford, England, is a division of Knoxville, Tenn. - based CTI Molecular Imaging Inc.

CMS has more than doubled the CCTA payment rate from $175 to $357.13. The move, expected to have a significant impact on the utilization of cardiac CT, received immediate praise from imaging specialists.

The newly cleared offering, AutoChamber, was designed with opportunistic screening in mind. It can evaluate many different kinds of CT images, including those originally gathered to screen patients for lung cancer.
